What to say of the NRA?
ReplyDeleteThis, at least, Enfant: I am not a member.
DeleteMy maternal grandparents were farmers in a small red-dirt East Texas town, Their total livelihood was their farm, plus whatever Pop could bag when he hunted in the woods on his property. They truly needed a gun. Actually, Pop owned several.
But their grandson has always been a big city dweller. My meals come entirely from the grocer; the hunt plays no part in them. The American tradition of gun ownership endangers my life every time I go out at night. No matter what the NRA claims, there are very few contexts in which the presence of guns makes a city dweller safer. And the notion from post-colonial days that gun ownership ensures one's right of revolution... oh, please, give me a break! Those times have been gone for at least a century; even with all those privately owned guns sitting around, our government does what our government damned well pleases.
I wish today's Americans wouldn't act like such utter idiots.
