It will never end, Enfant. Congress is wholly owned by the gun lobby, the NRA, The NRA has essentially unlimited money to contribute to the campaigns of opponents of any member who advocates even the mildest form of regulation on guns, e.g., background checks on gun buyers. There will always be enough handguns in the US to arm everyone, and that, combined with enough careless gun owners who leave their firearms loaded and within reach of children, assures that there will always be children maimed and killed by guns. As night follows day, gun violence follows the gun lobby.
DeleteNo one really opposes background checks, not even gun owners. But the NRA will see to it that no member of Congress who supports background checks is re-elected. That's how things are.
