Dems Are At It Again, This Time, Advocating National ID Card

Please read emptywheel on the subject; I'm not calm enough to write cogently about it. Then explain to me how we have two political parties...

  1. Where's the mailing list for people ready to emigrate to the moon? I'm ready to take my intelligence and "sense-Whatever-gave-a-ficus-tree" tests.

  2. I wouldn't be surprised to find out this is a red herring just to give the Dems a chance to point out how wacky the GOP is for supporting it but I could be wrong. If not then I say we just go for RFID's under the skin of the right wrist and be done with it.

  3. Right on your Social Security card it says "Not to be used for identification", but you can't get a Florida driver's license without showing it.

I don't care what the Dems think they are approving, if they don't make it a Federal felony to request the new card for any reason other than employment, it will be used by state and local governments for identification.

Show me the penalties for misuse, and I might buy the argument, but we all know there aren't going to be any penalties for local governments, so it will be an internal passport, just like the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

  4. I was wondering when you were going to get around to being livid about this!! I think we must have been transferred to an alternate universe . . .

  5. @Constance, fallenmonk, Bryan, Liz B. ...

Constance - sign me up. I'm gone tomorrow if it will distance me from these increasingly totalitarian people.

fallenmonk, they'll implant something in my wrist over... in... my dead body. Bad enough they thrust upon me one of those remote-readable passports the last time I had to renew.

Bryan, we all get asked for our SSN by half the vendors we deal with: buy a car, fork over your SSN; buy a damned cell phone, give them your SSN. It's hopeless unless one or both major parties exhibits the political will to put a stop to it. Ain't gonna happen in my lifetime.

Liz B., good to see you. These matters are never far from my mind, even if the onslaught of events is too thick and fast for me to blog about them. (BTW, are you by chance a UU MRE? I knew a "Liz B." many years ago who was exactly that.)
