Clearing The Desktop

In fact, in Ubuntu Linux 12.04 with the Gnome 3 shell, the default desktop is completely clear, and many of us keep it that way in the interest of sanity. So I'm speaking only metaphorically...

    1. Enfant, the real irony is that France seems to be instituting NSA-style surveillance at home just as American courts are beginning to rule NSA surveillance illegal under the US Constitution. I don't know French government well enough to understand who in France is empowered to determine if a law is proper ("constitutional," to use the American term) or not; there is no provision in the US Constitution stating who has that power, but the very first Chief Justice of the first Supreme Court simply declared that power to be the Supreme Court's, and it's been that way ever since. That's America for you: government by cut-and-try... :-)

  3. Re: Hawaii, I'm not sure how the state's experience would apply to other places in the U.S. I mean, the place has year-round sunshine (solar), active volcanic activities (geothermal), and is in the middle of the world's largest ocean so there is a lot of wind, both offshore and on. Plus, there might be a way for them to harvest the power of the ocean waves. While some other states might have one or two of them, I can't think of any that would have all of those natural renewable sources available.

so good for Hawai'i, but it will be even more impressive when Iowa or Ohio does it.

    1. 'noz, see the first item in this post. I have some confidence that those new Tesla batteries can be used effectively to time-shift whatever solar power you may be able to harvest during whatever daylight may come your way. If we now have (by the standards of my college days) exceptionally efficient solar arrays, and (thanks to Elon Musk & co.) high-capacity batteries to render the power delivery steady over time, we have 2/3 the ingredients: now we want only the political will.

    1. Hooray! I've been away from the computer for a few hours; I'll go read these now. Thanks, Enfant!
