Up Next: Indiana

In the face of a bill similar to the one in Wisconsin, Indiana's Democratic legislators have absquatulated, apparently mostly to Illinois. TPM has details.

  1. I think I complained about this before... absquatulate: To depart in a hurry; abscond... how come they have squat in that there word that means to move in a hurry?

  2. Good question, ellroon! I picked up the word from the various detective novels of the late Elliott Roosevelt, son of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt, whose mother is his detective in most novels. She doesn't absquatulate, but various bad guys do; I suppose I shouldn't use a word with even vaguely negative connotations for the Democrats in a legislature.

  3. absquatulate! i did not know this word existed, but i can tell you why it has 'squat' in there -- the prefix ab is latin for [approximately] 'away from'.

  5. Welcome (back from Blogger oblivion), hipparchia! Your thought about "ab" occurred to me as well, but not knowing any real history of the word, I just don't know.
