You Can Get Anything You Want At Amazon.com

And you thought it was at Alice's Restaurant. Ryan J. Reilly of TPMMuckraker:

Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, the 20-year-old who allegedly plotted to target the home of former President George W. Bush and attack other locations in the U.S. with improvised explosive devices led a seemingly lonely life in Texas after he arrived from Saudi Arabia in 2008. But the criminal complaint reveals that he may have compensated, in part, by starting a blog -- and that his alleged online activities had a decidedly darker side.

The investigation into Aldawsari appears to have started when the Carolina Biological Supply (CBS) reported a suspicious attempted purchase of the chemical phenol. Between December 2010 and January 2011, Aldawsari bought a number of items from Amazon.com that could seemingly be used to develop a weapon.

I know it's not funny. But what a great ad it is for Amazon! Apparently you really CAN get anything you want on or through Amazon.com! "Walk right in; it's around the back..."

  1. I stopped buying stuff from Amazon long ago -- something bugged about them and I've never been able to figure out why.

  2. Kay, I have no grievances with Amazon's catalog or efficiency; in my one-man business days I bought most of my software from or through them because saving 2-3 days in having it delivered to my doorstep meant that I gained that 2-3 days using the s/w on the project I bought it for... as a contract programmer, that often was a significant gain for me.

And Stella and I have each bought odd non-book items through Amazon; those wonderful solar-powered rainbow-makers can be had there.

OTOH, Amazon's treatment of publishers, especially small or specialty publishers, truly sucks. Often Amazon demands publisher prices to themselves that result in zero (or negative) profit for the small publisher. If the publisher won't give them the price they want, they remove the BUY button from that item's Amazon web page. If Amazon gets ticked at a small publisher, they sometimes de-list their entire catalog. That's just not right.
