Graham 'merican Hypocrites - Lindsey Edition

Sorry, Glenn Greenwald had no opportunity to put this one in his recent book. But TPM gives us the story:

Graham Vows To 'Tie Senate In Knots' Over $50K Left Out Of Budget Deal
Susan Crabtree | April 13, 2011, 9:08AM

...

In fact, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was down right incensed over the decision not to include a mere $50,000 for an Army Corps of Engineers study on deepening the Port of Charleston in his home state and vowed to "tie the Senate in knots" by holding up Obama administration nominations.

...
Ah, yes, another Republan signature motto: "Earmarks for me, but not for thee." Holding up Obama's appointments may irk Obama, but I've been hard put to tell the difference between Obama's appointments and any Republan president's appointments, so I, for one, don't care.

  1. If Zero understood the US government, he would make recess appointments to fill any critical positions outside of the courts, and ignore the Senate games. Recess appointments are good until the next Congress sits.

Maybe someone should explain to Graham that his party controls the House, and they agreed to this.

  2. You know, I was being unkind. Since it was only $50K and Lindsey has been around so long, I think that Congress should pass a resolution to allow Lindsey to PAY FOR HIS FREAKING STUDY OUT OF HIS $170K+ PER ANNUM SENATE SALARY!!!!

    ... But that's just me.

  3. I would also point out that the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War is not an appropriate time to bring up improvements to Charleston Harbor...

OT: have I ever mentioned how much I really dislike Lindsey Graham?

  4. jams and Bryan...

I personally don't object to the $50k expenditure. I live in a port city; over the past century we have had the channel dredged deeper possibly 4 or 5 times, using some federal money and some local money. It's something you have to do if you purport to offer a port for modern cargo ships. I believe Port of Houston depths are between 36' and 45', depending on what part of the channel and turning basin you're in, and they're going to have to make it 50' soon enough, to accommodate the newest large cargo ships fully laden.

So the problem is not the request. The request is reasonable, even necessary. The problem is that Sen. Lindsey Graham is behaving like a FIRST-CLASS ASSHOLE OF THE FIRST WATER, if you'll pardon one more reference to water. :-p
